Wills Phillips is an artist based in Portland, Maine, primarily working in sculpture. His practice focuses on the body, material, and place, considering how his works and own body inhabit space. Wills has spent time living in alternative and intentional communities, shaping his understanding of connection between land, objects, people, and other beings. In 2025, he graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from Maine College of Art & Design.
Working with wood, animal parts, plastic, fabric, paper pulp, plaster, metal, glass, and a myriad of other material deemed precious or junky, Wills explores how the body experiences, and is experienced by, the world. From a queer and trans perspective, he approaches the body as malleable, permeable, and multiple. Boundaries and edges of the body are emphasized and redefined. The touch of hands, tools, and machines evidence a remaking, or transformation. Through material and form, he considers lines between body and material, dead and living matter, and what is considered interior or exterior to the body.
